Twenty years ago, Argentina Women's National Field Hockey Team became "Las Leonas" (The Lionesses). Before Sydney 2000, they were always getting 4th place in every competition. In 1998, their coach at the time, Cachito Vigil, decided to create a change in the team's emocional and mental state to break that barrier and win their first Olympic medal (silver in Sydney). The team deserved to have an identity and, thinking about what a lioness represents (protector, hunter, unifier), they became "Las Leonas." More than a name, this is a symbol that brought an identity to the team and created a change in Argentina's hockey history.
I took this picture a year ago during the Panamerican Games in Lima. I never thought that I would be able to see them play live or win a gold medal to qualify for the Olympics, but sometimes life surprises you.
